Getting leads but no customers? Here is where they leak out

By Dejvis Ago ·

A business owner tells us the same thing almost every week: “We get leads, but they don’t turn into customers.” Usually the first instinct is to blame the ads, the leads, or the platform. Most of the time, the problem is somewhere between the lead and the sale.

Every lead goes through the same four steps before it pays you. Each step loses some people. Fix the step that loses the most, and you get more customers from the same ad budget.

1. Reaching the lead

The lead fills out a form or calls. Do you actually get a reply from them?

This is where most leads leak. The form comes in at night, on a weekend, or while your team is busy, and nobody follows up until the next day. By then, many people have already booked with whoever answered first. Others never pick up because they were only contacted once.

How to fix it: reply automatically within minutes, by text and email, at any hour. Then follow up more than once. A few short messages over several days reach people a single call never would.

2. Turning a conversation into a booking

You reached them. Do they book an appointment, a consultation, a quote visit or a tour?

Leaks here usually come from making the next step hard. Long back-and-forth to find a time, no clear offer, or no answer to the question the person actually had.

How to fix it: give them a booking link they can use right away, and answer the most common questions before they ask. Small changes in how your team talks to leads can make a big difference here.

3. Getting them to show up

They booked. Do they come?

No-shows are expensive, because you already paid for the lead and blocked time in the calendar.

How to fix it: send reminders by text and email the day before and a few hours before, with an easy way to reschedule instead of disappearing.

4. Closing the sale

They showed up. Do they buy?

This step depends on your offer, your price, and how the consultation or visit goes. Proof helps a lot here: real reviews, before-and-after work you are allowed to show, and clear next steps.

How to fix it: look at the deals you lost and find the most common reason. Then follow up with people who did not buy on the spot. Many buyers need time, and a simple follow-up brings some of them back.

Find your biggest leak

You do not need industry averages to know where to start. You need your own numbers. Count, for one typical month:

  • how many leads came in
  • how many you actually reached
  • how many booked
  • how many showed up
  • how many bought

Then see which step, if it improved a little, would bring in the most revenue. Our free Lead Leak Calculator does that math for you in a minute.

If the biggest leak is reaching people fast, start with lead follow-up automation. If people visit but do not get in touch, look at your landing pages. And if you are not sure where your leads even come from, fix your tracking first.
